You're not alone. It feels like every journey starts with a mini-budget crisis at the pump! That's why so many drivers are making the switch to electric vehicles (EVs). Beyond the eco-benefits and that super-smooth, quiet ride, there's a big question on everyone's mind: Will an EV actually save me money?

The answer, in short, is a resounding YES, for most drivers. But "most" isn't good enough, right? You want to know about you. Your driving habits, your current car, your electricity costs – these all play a part.

That's why we at Lemac Power have created something really useful: an interactive EV Savings Calculator right here on this page! No more guesstimates or confusing formulas. Just plug in a few details, and you'll instantly see the potential savings of switching to electric and charging smarter with a Lemac Power home charger.

Let's face it, while saving the planet is a fantastic bonus, for many of us, the day-to-day cost is what really matters. Petrol prices jump around like crazy, influenced by everything from global events to local supply. Electricity prices? Generally much more stable and, crucially, often significantly cheaper per mile.

Think about it: powering your car from your home electricity supply is like having your own personal fuel station, with prices you can often control, especially if you switch to an off-peak charging tariff.

Want to supercharge those savings? Home charging is the answer. It's not just about convenience (although waking up to a fully charged car every day is pretty amazing). It's about smart economics:

Cheaper Energy: Home electricity is usually cheaper than public charging points. Time-of-use tariffs can slash your overnight charging costs even further.

Total Control: You decide when to charge, taking advantage of the cheapest electricity rates and fitting charging perfectly into your lifestyle.

No More Petrol Station Detours: Say goodbye to those time-wasting, overpriced petrol station visits!

And this is where Lemac Power EV Chargers come into their own. Engineered for safe, fast, and reliable home charging, Lemac Power chargers put you in command of your EV's running costs. They are designed to be user-friendly and built to last, ensuring your EV is always ready to go, without emptying your bank account.

Plus, think of it this way: those fuel savings aren't just pocket money. Over time, they can significantly offset the initial cost of installing a Lemac Power home charger itself! Imagine your reduced running costs gradually paying for the convenience and control of home charging – it's a smart investment that keeps on giving.

Ready to Calculate Your Savings?

The race to create more efficient and sustainable electric vehicle (EV) batteries is heating up, with companies like Our Next Energy (ONE), StoreDot, and Factorial leading the charge. These innovators are pushing the boundaries of energy density, charging speeds, and safety in their quest to power the next generation of EVs.

Our Next Energy (ONE) is focused on extending the range of EVs with its breakthrough battery technologies. Their dual-chemistry battery, dubbed Gemini, combines two battery types within one system to maximize both energy density and safety. By addressing the issue of range anxiety, ONE’s technology could enable EVs to travel up to 600 miles on a single charge, a significant leap from current standards. In the last few months, a BMW iX fitted with a Gemini battery pack was able to drive 608 miles, compared to the standard range of up to 382 miles.

StoreDot is revolutionizing charging speeds with its Extreme Fast Charging (XFC) battery technology. The Israel-based company aims to solve one of the most significant pain points for EV owners—charging time. StoreDot's silicon-dominant batteries promise to charge up to 80% in just five minutes, a remarkable improvement over current lithium-ion batteries. This rapid charging capability could make EVs even more practical and accessible to a wider audience. With a test bed upcoming Polestar 5 prototype, the 77kWh battery pack charged at over 310kW and peaked at 370kW without relying on any proprietary charging hardware.

Factorial Energy is tackling the issue of battery safety and energy efficiency with its solid-state battery technology. Unlike traditional liquid-based lithium-ion batteries, solid-state batteries use a solid electrolyte, which increases energy density and reduces the risk of fires. Factorial’s proprietary electrolyte material, called Factorial Electrolyte System Technology (FEST™), is designed to enhance the performance of EV batteries while making them safer and more reliable. The increased energy density help push the maximum range the battery pack can produce. Their Solstice solid state battery is set to power upcoming Mercedes models, with Stellantis and Hyundai both having invested in Factorial, their technology could shape other brands as well

Addressing the Future of Battery Production

Current lithium-ion batteries rely heavily on rare earth metals, like lithium, cobalt, and nickel, which pose social and environmental challenges due to resource scarcity and the impact of mining. However, the future of battery production is shifting toward more sustainable alternatives. Innovations such as solid-state batteries and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries are emerging, with the potential to reduce or eliminate the need for rare earth metals. Additionally, sodium-ion batteries offer a promising solution by using more abundant and environmentally friendly materials.

These advancements aim to create more ethical, eco-friendly battery technologies, paving the way for a cleaner and more sustainable EV future.

Why Invest in a Lemac Power Home 7kW Charger Now?

As exciting as these next-generation innovations are, it’s important to remember that the infrastructure for charging is just as crucial as the batteries themselves. Investing in a Lemac Power 7kW home charger now ensures you’re ready for the future, no matter which EV or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) you choose. A reliable home charger provides convenience, reduces dependence on public chargers, and ensures that your vehicle is charged overnight, so it's ready for use when you are.

Additionally, the Lemac Power charger is versatile and capable of meeting the needs of today’s EVs and PHEVs while future-proofing your home for the technological advances to come. By installing a 7kW charger now, you'll stay ahead of the curve, enjoying the benefits of a fast, efficient charge while innovations in battery technology continue to evolve.

class="zpheading zpheading-align-center " data-editor="true">With the battery being the heart of any EV, what can you do to help keep it healthy

For many car owners, switching to an electric vehicle (EV) represents an entirely new driving experience, bringing along numerous questions and concerns. One of the most common worries is about the battery life of an electric car. How long will it last? How do you ensure it stays in good condition? And what about the horror stories of batteries dying out too soon?

The good news is that EV batteries are built to last, often as long as the car itself. Like the batteries in your phone or laptop, EV batteries do degrade over time, but they hold up remarkably well under normal conditions. Typically, after 200,000 miles of driving, an EV battery should still retain at least 70% of its original capacity. In fact, some Tesla Model S taxis operating from Gatwick Airport have logged over 300,000 miles in just three years, with their batteries retaining more than 82% of their capacity.

Despite some alarming stories, the reality is that EV batteries are designed to endure, and with proper care, they can last for many years without significant degradation. Electric vehicle (EV) batteries have both gross and net battery capacities, which are terms used to describe the total amount of energy the battery can store and the amount of that energy that is actually usable for driving the vehicle. it's important to understand the difference between gross and net battery capacities. Gross capacity refers to the total energy the battery can store, while net capacity is the portion that’s actually usable for driving. Manufacturers intentionally reserve some of the battery's total capacity as a buffer to prevent deep discharges and overcharging, which can degrade the battery over time. This protective measure helps extend the battery's lifespan and maintain its performance, ensuring your EV runs efficiently for longer. Some car makers will allow the BMS (Battery Management System) to adjust the reserves in the gross capacity to be used as the battery ages

Battery degradation happens naturally over time and with use. Factors like frequent charging, discharging, and exposure to extreme temperatures can all contribute to the decline in efficiency. For instance, rapid charging generates higher temperatures, which can cause wear on the lithium-ion cells. This is why manufacturers recommend charging to 80% rather than to 100% and avoiding deep discharges where possible. The environment plays a role too. Hotter climates can lead to a subtle yet noticeable reduction in battery performance compared to cooler regions.

Fortunately, there are ways to preserve your EV’s battery life:

Smart Charging: Avoid letting your battery drop below 20% and charge only up to 80% to reduce heat build-up. Most modern EVs allow you to set these limits, ensuring you protect the battery even when you're not actively thinking about it.

Avoid Rapid Charging When Possible: While DC rapid chargers are convenient for quick top-ups, using them sparingly will help maintain your battery's longevity by reducing the number of high-heat cycles the cells undergo.

Temperature Management: In extreme weather, keep your car plugged in to allow the thermal management system to maintain an optimal temperature for the battery.

Drive Conservatively: Aggressive driving and frequent use of an EV’s instant torque can accelerate battery wear. By driving more gently, you can help keep the battery cooler and extend its life.

Charging at Home - The Lemac Power Advantage.

Having a reliable home charger, like those from Lemac Power, can make a significant difference in maintaining your EV battery’s health. Home chargers allow you to easily manage charging schedules, ensuring you don’t exceed the recommended 80% charge level. Plus, with a Lemac Power charger, you can take advantage of overnight charging at lower electricity rates, further reducing the stress on your battery and extending its life.

While EV batteries do degrade over time, with the right care and precautions, they can last as long as your vehicle does. By following the tips outlined above and using a high-quality home charger like those from Lemac Power, you can keep your battery in peak condition for years to come.

class="zpheading zpheading-align-center " data-editor="true">MyBMW app now offers drivers help in making switch to EV

BMW is approaching the point of replacing Tesla as the leader of the UK’s electric car market, marking a significant shift in the industry. With electric BMW sales soaring by 70% this year and nearing 22,000 units, the brand is closing in on Tesla’s 25,500 sales. This surge comes as Tesla struggles both globally in the UK, where increased competition and shifting consumer perceptions are eroding its dominance. BMW’s aggressive push, led by models like the i4, is paying off, particularly in the corporate fleet and sector where it excels.

To help this switch, BMW have expanded the features in the MyBMW app with the new Electric Vehicle Analysis. Available to drivers for most of their ICE model range released since 2019 that use the BMW Operating system 7, this tool is designed to highlight the benefit for drivers in swapping to an EV. By using the onboard telemetry data the app collects, once a driver has covered just over 1200 miles and 200 journeys, they can then compare their journeys to an EV in the BMW range using real world data of their driving habits. BMW hopes that by letting drivers see how an EV would fit personalized driving, like journeys that could have been completed in a single charge and the potential for making the most of fuel savings, that they can help aid people in choosing to drive a zero emissions car.

This is an important step in helping the next wave of EV adoption by helping show drivers that range anxiety is becoming far less of an issue with the improvements in technology. By using personalised journey data, the driver can see exactly how many of their typical trips could be completed on a single charge, easing fears about running out of power, and what charging solutions would suit them. General statistics about EV range and performance might not reflect a driver's unique patterns, such as the distances they travel, the types of routes they take, or how frequently they drive.

As BMW’s new service expands, one of the next planned features is to analyse time parked and longer journeys, combining it with charging times and charging options. Drivers still have misconceptions about EVs' suitability for their needs. Seeing concrete data that demonstrates an EV's practicality based on their own driving habits can help overcome these, and help break down barriers, giving drivers confidence that they're making a well-informed choice, reducing the uncertainty and potential regret associated with switching to a new type of vehicle.

For BMW drivers whose personalised data confirms that switching to an EV is a practical choice, investing in a Lemac Power EV charger at home or work is a smart next step. It ensures that charging is convenient, and always within reach, allowing them to fully embrace the benefits of electric driving. With a compact charger like Lemac Power, drivers can maximize the convenience of their EV, reduce downtime, and take advantage of lower energy costs by charging during off-peak hours. The sleek, stylish design makes a perfect partner for the premium feel of BMW’s range of vehicles. This investment not only enhances the overall EV experience but also solidifies their commitment to a more sustainable and efficient driving future.

class="zpheading zpheading-align-center " data-editor="true">Now that 2024 is past the halfway point, what has been shaping the UK used EV market so far?

Over the past three years, the used EV market has evolved dramatically. In 2021 and 2022, the market was full of higher prices and limited supply due to the still early state of the EV industry and production slowdowns. The Tesla Model 3, one of the early mainstream electric vehicles that lead the way to the marketplace we see today, has only just turned 5 years old in the UK.

By 2023, the influx of new EV models and improvements in charging infrastructure are beginning to stabilise the market, making EVs more attractive to used car buyers. Now in 2024, the market is benefiting from these foundational changes. Improved battery technology, longer ranges, and faster charging times have made older EV models more competitive, sustaining their value over time.

The UK used electric vehicle (EV) market has seen dynamic changes over the past few years, reflecting broader trends in consumer behavior, technology, and market dynamics. As of mid-2024, this market is vibrant, with both opportunities and challenges. In the first week of July alone, nearly 700 EVs were sold, with BCA (British Car Auctions) on track to record over 30,000 units sold in the next 12 months. This surge in sales is driven by increased demand and pricing stability, making EVs more appealing compared to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

Auto Trader's recent analysis underscores unprecedented shifts in the supply dynamics of the used car market. The reduced production of new cars during the pandemic has led to a significant decrease in the number of sub-five-year-old vehicles, particularly affecting brands like Vauxhall, Ford, and Mercedes-Benz. By contrast, brands like MG and Tesla have seen substantial increases in the number of younger vehicles available. Due to the pandemic and the resulting lockdowns, there are an estimated 2.7-2.8 million cars which would have been 3 years old now, but never hit the roads due to finance extensions and lack of supply.

The surge in EVs entering the market is another key trend. Auto Trader estimates that by the end of 2024, around 4% of the total cars on UK roads will be electric, with this figure expected to rise to over a third by 2033. For the hold-outs on traditional ICE vehicles, there will never be more choice of these vehicles than there is right now, in particular the number of diesel vehicles in the market. Each month the remaining models that fall into this category will dwindle, with car makers moving to PHEV and EV production.

Cap HPI reports encouraging signs of price recovery in the used EV sector, with increased consumer demand driving prices up. Conversely, Indicata highlights a 43.8% drop in used EV prices over the past 18 months, bringing them closer to ICE vehicle prices. This price parity is crucial, as it marks an important tipping point for more people to switch to electric driving. Specialist EV trade buyers are thriving, driven by their market knowledge and ability to dispel myths about EVs, particularly around battery health and warranties. With a used EV not having the same offers of free charging points as many newer options, it's important to pick the best EV home charger for any potential car you might be looking at.

As the market continues to adjust and mature, now is an ideal time to invest in a home EV charger. Investing in a home EV charger not only supports current needs but also future-proofs homes as the shift towards electric driving accelerates. We highlighted this in our post about the point at which the cost of driving electric from a home charger has covered only 6 months of ICE driving. Home EV chargers provide a range of benefits that make them a valuable investment for electric vehicle owners. They offer the convenience by enabling you to charge your vehicle overnight or whenever it's parked at home, ensuring it's always ready to go without the hassle of frequent trips to public charging stations. Charging at home can lead to significant cost savings compared to using public stations, as you can take advantage of lower electricity rates during off-peak hours or take advantage of home solar to charge your car, ultimately reducing your energy costs.

Installing a home EV charger can boost your property's value and appeal to potential buyers interested in electric vehicles. Lastly, regular charging at home can help maintain your EV's battery health, providing a consistent and safe charging environment compared to public stations. Embrace the electric revolution today and enjoy the benefits of cleaner, more efficient transportation.

It also ranks as the 7th most popular new car across all fuel types, a significant jump from 254th place in the UK in June. This battery-powered SUV stands out as the fastest-growing new car model this month. Among pure electric cars, it has garnered more inquiries than any other model, representing over 10% of EV leads sent to retailers.

This marks the second time this year that Honda's flagship EV has taken the top spot. Its rapid ascent can be attributed to generous discounts, deposit contributions, and finance deals. Last month Honda announced a fresh retail offer on the small SUV.

The Honda e:Ny1 showcases intelligent design, combining style and innovation for urban lifestyles. It prioritizes environmental sustainability as an all-electric vehicle, reducing carbon emissions. Featuring a human-centred approach, the SUV offers fun-to-drive dynamics and advanced technology. The e:Ny1's design includes a distinctive aesthetic, spacious interior, and advanced features like wireless phone charging. Built on the e:N Architecture F platform, it boasts a high-performance power drive unit, long-range battery, and improved torsional rigidity for dynamic performance and comfort. Honda's commitment to electrification is evident in the e:Ny1, reflecting their dedication to innovation and customer-centric technology. With a range of up to 256 miles, it’s easy to see why the e:Ny1 makes sense when matched with the current offers.

With any new or used EV on offer to drivers, the number one factor is to make sure it’s convenient to charge your Electric Vehicle or Plug In Hybrid. While Honda have got finance offers in place to help EV drivers, there’s nothing from the manufacturer to help customers with a 7kW home charger. Our EV Charger range at Lemac Power makes an ideal home charger solution for Honda EV customers.

This trend underscores the impact of affordability in engaging consumers with new EVs and how manufacturers are adapting to meet this year's ZEV Mandate targets. The average discounts on new cars have increased from 6.6% to 8.7% since July last year, with 75% of new cars now offering some form of discount. EVs, in particular, boast an average discount of 10.6%.

Auto Trader's data, drawn from approximately 2 million monthly visitors searching for new cars, indicates that the combination of improved options and affordability is resonating with consumers. Despite disruptions from events like the General Election, Euros, and Wimbledon, consumer interest in new cars remains steady. Visits to Auto Trader's new car platform have increased by around 6% year-on-year in July.

During the Euros, BYD strategically elevated its brand visibility to engage consumers with their cars. The brand experienced a 33% surge in ad views for new and used models throughout the tournament. This initiative propelled the BYD Seal to become the UK's fourth most viewed electric car this month, with BYD ranking as the seventh most viewed electric brand with their Atto 3 and Dolphin making a 3 car range in the UK. Despite these efforts, due to BYD's relative novelty among UK buyers, neither the Seal nor the brand made it onto the list of top makes and models driving the highest volume of inquiries in July.

The Electric Car Scheme has pinpointed July 15 as the crossover day, when a petrol driver surpasses an electric driver's annual fuel costs. This transition occurs earlier this year due to reduced electricity rates. Because fuel prices and the energy price cap fluctuate, this date varies annually. In 2023, with higher electricity prices, it fell on August 1, indicating that EV owners saved more on fuel in 2024 due to lower energy costs.

A petrol driver will surpass an electric vehicle (EV) driver's annual fuel spending by mid-July. This finding stems from analysing the yearly fuel expenses of the average UK driver covering 7,400 miles. Petrol drivers are projected to spend around £1,268, while electric car drivers are estimated at roughly £680. Petrol cars, with an average fuel efficiency of 38.8 miles per gallon, are influenced by the current petrol price of £1.44 per litre in 2024. In contrast, the average cost per mile for electric driving is a mere £0.09. This cost can vary depending on the EV model and charging habits. For example, using an off-peak tariff to charge a Tesla Model Y Long Range could achieve this milestone as early as March 10. To expedite reaching their Electric Vehicle Day, drivers are advised to utilize home charging with a 7kW EV charger, especially in conjunction with a solar panel setup.

On March 5, a petrol car surpasses the carbon emissions of an electric car for an entire year of driving and power usage. Although the UK's power grid still relies on fossil fuels, electric vehicle (EV) driving isn't entirely emission-free. With the increasing integration of renewables into the grid, this day is projected to shift earlier annually. Over the past year, 38.1% of the UK's electricity came from renewable sources, resulting in 352kg of CO2 emissions for 7,400 miles traveled by an EV, in contrast to 2,000kg emitted by an equivalent petrol car.

Thom Groot, CEO and co-founder of The Electric Car Scheme, commented: "For the rest of the year, electric car drivers can be confident that petrol drivers have already spent as much on fuel as they will for the entire year. Additionally, since early March, EV drivers have been driving virtually emissions-free compared to traditional cars, significantly reducing pollution in our communities and bringing health benefits."

"While it's well known that driving an EV reduces fuel costs and emissions, this is not always easy to visualise. That's why we created the concept of 'Electric Car Day' to highlight the substantial impact of switching to an EV. As we celebrate for the second year, we see this impact growing as electricity prices fall and more of it comes from renewable sources."

"We recognise that upfront costs remain higher for electric cars, which is the main barrier for many Brits. This is why we created The Electric Car Scheme, enabling more drivers to afford an EV through salary sacrifice, offering savings of up to 60% on a lease—similar to the Cycle to Work scheme, but for electric cars."

The study marks the second year the group has identified a crossover point where EVs start paying back

.

AA President Edmund King commented: “We understand why some drivers have been hesitant about EVs due to higher upfront costs, but with prices coming down and running costs falling, it could be the right time for a new cohort of people to consider if an electric car is right for them. The data shows a clear delineation in the relative costs and environmental impacts of driving a petrol car, which is hard to ignore, especially as the date when a petrol driver spends more on fuel than an electric driver will over an entire year creeps ever earlier.”

Electric vehicles offer environmental benefits beyond carbon emissions due to advancements in battery technology and increased use of renewable energy. Resources like websites and apps help drivers assess savings and environmental advantages. The expanding public charging network reduces range anxiety for potential EV adopters. 'Electric Car Day' marks a shift towards sustainable transportation, reflecting advancements in energy. As technology and infrastructure improve, the benefits of electric vehicles will become more apparent, promoting a cleaner future.

Suppliers are chosen by consumers to purchase electricity, while DNOs focus on delivering electricity to households and businesses.

Some properties may be on a "looped supply" where two properties share a single electricity service cable connected to the main network. This setup allows for the distribution of electricity load among multiple households based on their diverse electricity usage patterns. Identifying if your property is on a looped supply can be done by examining your electric meter for two service cables entering it. If your property is on a looped supply, your DNO will need to unloop the supply before installing your EV charger. This upgrade is usually free of charge.

The installation of your EV charger may be delayed slightly until the upgrades are completed.

It's important to provide your MPRN/MPAN to us so we can contact your DNO and ensure that your property and the network are ready for the installation of your new EV charger. Our team has tools to help identify if you are on a looped supply, but speaking to your DNO is essential for accurate information and necessary upgrades.
